Città dell’Altra Economia & BioMercato

The Città dell’Altra Economia & BioMercato, a 37,000 square foot (3,500 square meter) complex opened in the ex-Mattatoio (former slaughterhouse) in Testaccio in September 2007. Since its inauguration, the complex has undergone several transformations and is currently enjoying its most organized and exciting period. A small organic grocery store stands beside a bar/cafeteria. There are exhibition spaces, a restaurant and–perhaps the best part–there is an outdoor farmers’ market every Saturday and Sunday.

SpazioBio, the organic supermarket, sells wine and ingredients from Lazio, the region of which Rome is the capital. The bar, Café Boario, offers budget-friendly homestyle dishes served cafeteria-style. Roasted vegetables and simple meat dishes are humble but tasty and panini and pizzette are served at the bar or to take away. The restaurant, Stazione di Posta, serves a full menu with a focus on meat; there are gluten free options. Every Saturday and Sunday, the BioMercato welcomes farmers and food producers from all over Lazio. Unlike most markets in Rome (even the other farmers’ markets), visitors can speak directly to producers, purchase their products and support small local businesses.

A major draw of the Città dell’Altra Economia is the atmosphere; families, friends and dogs lounge on the open gassy spaces or at the numerous outside tables. Visit the CAE with an empty stomach, shop for food, have some lunch or a drink and enjoy Rome’s best farmers’ market.
